This Weekend
Moerenuma Park turns into a 50-minute fireworks show this Saturday, choreographed to music and co-designed with figure skating legend Mao Asada — Hokkaido's biggest fireworks night of the year. It lands the same weekend Furano throws open its wineries for the annual grape harvest, so pick your Saturday: sparks over Sapporo, or a glass in hand under Shimizuyama's hills.

Nakajima Park, Sapporo — submitted by Barry Mernin
"This is from our visit to the Illuminated Nakajima Koen. Such a groovy event. We ate sweet potatoes from all over Japan. Then, we saw some incredibly beautiful foliage. This was all due to the tip [from] the good people of [Hokkaido Today]. Thanks for the tip!"
Nakajima Park's autumn lights wrapped up on Nov 3. The Sapporo White Illumination opens Nov 20, and it comes to Nakajima Park from Jan 9 to Jan 28.
今週の一言 · WORD OF THE WEEK
踊り
(をどり) Odori | oh-doh-ree
"Dance." Geisha stage shows traditionally write it with the old kana spelling をどり, as in this weekend's 札幌をどり (Sapporo Odori). Don't confuse it with Odori Park (大通), which is really Ōdōri, "main street."

WEEKEND PICK
A rare afternoon with Sapporo's geisha
On Saturday, 11 geisha of the Sapporo Meigi-ren take over the Education and Culture Hall for the third Sapporo Odori, with shows at 11:30 and 15:30. It's a chance to see an art form that few visitors encounter, and it needs no Japanese: dance, song and shamisen carry it. Sapporo's geisha quarter dates to the pioneer era, and the Sapporo Chamber of Commerce serves as the group's secretariat. The hall is five minutes from Nishi 11-chome subway station, so you can pair it with the DANNP nature-photography show at Odori Park or an evening at the Foovie Bar.

See you out there. · 今週末も楽しんで。
Cities Are Running Out of Salt Before Winter Even Starts

Road salt is one of those things nobody thinks about until plow trucks come back empty, and this year that's happening before the first snowfall. Some cities haven't gotten a single bid for winter supply, while others are paying nearly double last year's price.
North America doesn't mine enough of its own, which is why it ships in 8 to 10 million tonnes from places like Egypt and Chile, two weeks away by boat.
Atlas Salt (TSXV: SALT | OTCQX: SALQF) is building a mine in Newfoundland near a deepwater port where ships can reach Boston in three days. With salt, the real cost is in shipping, and CEO Nolan Peterson says the difference is so big that overseas producers could give their salt away and still come out more expensive than Atlas. The project is shovel-ready and projected to generate roughly C$188 million a year in free cash flow.
